ENCAUSTIC DISCOVERY—AN INTRODUCTION TO ENCAUSTIC PAINTING
In this exciting class, encaustic artist Terri Truitt, will introduce students to the fascinating world of encaustic painting. This once ancient technique has enjoyed a vital resurgence in recent decades. It is no wonder, as contemporary artists are drawn to encaustic painting due to its dimensional quality and luminous color.
Encaustic paint is made of beeswax, resin and pigment, which are kept molten on a heated palette. It is painted on an absorbent surface and then is fused to the surface with a heat gun or torch.
Encaustic paint cools immediately, so that there is no drying time, yet it can always be reworked. The forgiving nature of encaustic paints allows them to be re-melted to create different effects, layered in opaque or translucent layers, modeled, textured, scraped, sculpted, polished, or combined with a variety of materials to create collage works.
